Voice of Praise by Cathey Edgington

That my heart may sing your praises and not be silent; praise his Holy Name.

(Psalm 30:12 NIV)

Over a year ago, I was diagnosed with a paralyzed left vocal cord. When it first happened, I couldn’t speak but slowly my voice came back in a whisper. Today, I can be heard, but my voice sounds raspy, like I have a sore throat.

The saddest part of my condition is not being able to sing. I love singing praises to the Lord, but it sounds terrible to me. So, I sing praises in my heart. My favorite time of the year is Christmas with all the wonderful songs. Last year, I could only mouth the words. But this year, I’m able to sing in my “new voice.” It’s not how I used to sound, but at least I can be heard. I can sing “Joy to the World” because of the joy God put in my heart, even in my situation.

I’ve always felt people didn’t really listen to what I have to say, but this past year, people stopped and listened closely. Words are precious. Today, I speak only when I have something to say. It’s difficult to speak, so I want to be uplifting and encouraging when I do.

Prayer: Dear Lord, I choose to use my voice to praise You in everything I say. When I can’t be heard, I know You are listening to my heart. Thank you, Jesus Christ. Amen
