The Lights on the Rooftop by Maya Lia Vela

You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be
hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl.
Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the
house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they
may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.
Matthew 5:14-16 (NIV)

My family isn’t huge on Christmas decorating. Sure, we have
a tree, but that’s most likely all the Christmas spirit you can get out
of our humble home. Although we don’t spend hours on decorations,
my neighbors never hesitate to go all out. It doesn’t quite feel like
Christmas until they’ve decorated their lawns and houses with extravagant
Christmas lights.

It’s a Christmas Eve tradition to get a hot chocolate from Starbucks
and drive all around the neighborhood to see if the neighbors have
outdone themselves from the previous years. As a child, I paid attention
to the houses with huge blown up Santa’s, Rudolph, elves, and
the occasional snowmen on the lawns.

It wasn’t until my family was heading home that from the street of
my house, I could see a huge cross made of Christmas lights on the
rooftop of a home.

Lord, let us always glorify you in all that we do, not only during the
holiday season, so that we can shine your light in the world. Amen.
