Christmas Treasures

“When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.” Matthew 2:10-11 (NIV)

When I was a little girl my mother always made a big production about Christmas being Jesus’s birthday. Every year my brother and I would help my mom bake and decorate a birthday cake. After reading the Christmas story in Luke 2:1-20 we would gather around the dining room table, light the candles on the cake and sing Happy Birthday to Jesus.

Mom’s purpose in this tradition was to ensure that her children would grow up celebrating the birth of Jesus, instead of only focusing on receiving gifts. My mom gave us treasures far greater than dolls and trains; she gave us the joy of knowing and celebrating our Savior.

I am passing this Christmas tradition on to my own son, Wyatt, so that each year he will be reminded of the joys found in knowing God’s one and only Son.

Dear Heavenly Father, this Christmas season let us rejoice in the birth of your Son, Jesus Christ, who you sent to save us from our sins!

  1. Allison; your devotion depicting a family tradition of celebrating Jesus’ birth is a good example for all people to follow.
