Rejoicing in a Memory — by Alfred W. Bates

“The precepts of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart …” Psalm 19:8 (NASV)

I slowly walked by the food table looking at the colorful display of snacks spread out for the conferees. One caught my eye, a plate of miniature cinnamon rolls. I had to try one. -– Its taste took my thoughts back to my mother’s kitchen at Christmas time, over sixty years ago. I could smell her cinnamon rolls coming out of the oven, and see her smile when I licked my lips and said, “Mom, these rolls are so delicious.”

My thoughts returned to the conference room as my throat tightened. I struggled to swallow the last bite of the tasty roll. A tear pooled in my eye and my heart swelled in my chest, realizing mother was not here anymore to bake those rolls. In my heart though, I quickly rejoiced knowing that she had faithfully served the Lord daily to keep His statutes, and by His grace has eternal life with Him.

That memory reminded me of how mankind celebrates and re- joices our Savior’s birth at Christmas time. May we all remember that joy throughout the year and live our lives daily as a testimony that we know Him as our Savior.

Thank you, heavenly Father, for your son Jesus and His sacrifice; For your grace that we have the reward of eternal life when we accept Him as our personal Savior.
